4 Chiropractic Treatments For Lower Back Pain

Blog

If you suffer from lower back pain, one of the best things you can do is see a chiropractor. You probably know, in general terms, that a chiropractor will adjust your spine to help alleviate your pain. But what does this really mean, and what exactly will your chiropractor do when you arrive at their office complaining of lower back pain? Here's a look.

1. Activation

One of the first things your chiropractor is likely to do for lower back pain is use the activator. This is a special tool that has two points of contact. Your chiropractor will position it so that the points of contact are on either side of your spine. They will then push a button, and the activator will jolt against your spine. This won't hurt; it will feel like someone tapping you firmly. Even though your lower back hurts, your chiropractor will likely do this all up and down your spine since misalignments further up the back can contribute to lower back pain.

2. Drop Table Adjustment

If there are any places where your spine is badly misaligned, your chiropractor will probably also have you lie down on what is known as a drop table. This is a special table that has some "give" to it. Your chiropractor will apply direct pressure to specific parts of your spine to adjust it; the table will move with you to cushion the motion. Again, this won't hurt, although you will probably hear a loud popping noise at times.

3. Mobilization

Mobilization is another set of techniques chiropractors often use in treating lower back pain. This involves stretching out the muscles on either side of the spine, which will help the adjustment to "take" and will also ease your pain. Your chiropractor may have you sit in a certain way while they stretch your body, or they may fold one leg over the other and have you bend in a certain direction.

4. Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is also incredibly helpful for lower back pain. While not traditional chiropractic care, it is something that chiropractors are beginning to use more often. The low-powered laser helps increase circulation to the area, which reduces inflammation and speeds healing. You'll feel nothing more than relaxation as the laser is applied to your back for a couple of minutes.
