2 Natural Methods of Pain Relief for Migraines

Blog

Migraine headaches not only cause throbbing, one-sided head pain, but they can also cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and light sensitivity. Medications used in the treatment of migraine headaches can cause serious side effects such as an abnormal heart rate, difficulty breathing, and gastrointestinal problems. Because of this, you may want to consider the following natural methods of pain management.

Chiropractic Treatments

A chiropractic adjustment can relieve migraine pain, as well as referred pain to the neck, upper spine, and shoulders. Many people believe that chiropractic pain management therapy is only effective for spinal disorders, however, it can improve the symptoms of many other conditions.

These include insomnia, anxiety, balance problems, headaches, and sciatic nerve pain. After your chiropractic adjustments, your migraine pain will improve, and you may even sleep better. Your chiropractor may choose to combine your adjustments with therapeutic massage, which further enhances pain relief. Although you will probably feel better after your first adjustment, the chiropractic physician may recommend regular appointments to prevent migraines from occurring in the first place.

Strong Coffee

A cup of strong black coffee is also a surprisingly effective way to ease migraine pain. When you have a migraine headache, the blood vessels of your head put pressure on the surrounding structures of your scalp. This is because during a migraine attack, your blood vessels dilate, or widen.

Coffee contains caffeine, which is a potent vasoconstrictor. This means that it can constrict your blood vessels (make them smaller) so that pressure is removed from the muscles and other structures of your head. Other beverages such as cola and tea contain caffeine, however, strong black coffee seems to be most effective. Caffeine is often the active ingredient in many over-the-counter migraine medications, however, if you want natural pain relief without having to take medications, consider coffee.

It is also important to note, that in certain people, caffeine may be a trigger for migraine pain. If you are not accustomed to drinking strong coffee, start with a small amount, because drinking heavily caffeinated beverages can cause heart palpitations and anxiety in those sensitive to caffeine.

If you suffer from regular migraine headaches, make an appointment with your chiropractor for pain management. After a complete assessment and medical history, your doctor will determine which treatment options are best suited for migraine pain. Your chiropractor may even recommend certain dietary changes that may help stave off your migraine headache symptoms.
